Which edge detection algorithm? There are several of them.

Did you read docuntation, which says that source image should be grayscale?

If source image should be grayscale, there is no error. But with version 1.7 the
source image must not be grayscale. I don't know which was changed in this 
version.

Not an issue. Read documentation, which says about supported image formats.

In 2.0 edge filters require grayscale image. Before grayscaling was done 
automatically. But since there are different available grayscale algorithms, it 
was 
decided to leave it for user to decide which grayscale algorithm he wants.
