Universal Media Server doesn't show up in Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player #55

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Setup Universal Media Server
2. Make sure it's started and working fine on other DLNA client devices
3. Try connecting to it using Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
In VLC Media Player, Select "Playlist" option > Local Network > Universal Plug
N Play
On accessing this, you will be prompted by Windows Firewall to allow access to
VLC, please accept it.
You will notice that Universal Media Server doesn't show up in the list as
expected.

In Windows Media Player, it should appear in left-pane but it doesn't show up
there either.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
UMS 2.6.0
VLC 2.0.5
WMP 12 and 11.

Please provide any additional information below.
I found this relevant link in forum for WMP but it isn't confirmed that this is
resolved.

I think enabling UPNP for WMP would enable it for VLC as well but that will
need testing.

And I would like to take a chance to thanks for all the effort put in by you
guys.
Awesome work!!!

I forgot to mention OS, It's running on Windows 8. And I have Windows 8 and
Windows 7 on other machines from where I can't access using WMP or VLC.

WMP detection is fixed in the upcoming version. Not sure about VLC via DLNA,
but we do have VLC as a transcoding engine in the next version too. Feel free
to check out our beta builds

Hi Subjunk,

Thanks for fixing WMP detection.
The VLC issue is not related to transcoding.
In VLC Media Player, the playlist has Local Network/Universal Plug'n'Play
option.
But Universal Media Server doesn't get listed.
It allows us to browse files available on DLNA server basically.
I have attached a screenshot of it as well.

Strange that it doesn't show up, since UMS accepts all connections whether it
recognises them or not. Do any other media servers work with VLC?

Yes, quite strange indeed.
I am able to browse and play files shared using Windows Media Player.
I haven't tested this with other DLNA servers though except UMS and WMP Sharing.
Just some more info.
UMS does detect it.
The user agent search string is "Portable SDK for UPnP devices"

Hmm I just tested it myself and VLC does list UMS, maybe it's something they
fixed in 2.0.6, have you updated to that?
However if I click UMS in VLC, VLC goes into a loop and crashes

I just tested on 2.0.6
I noticed that UMS appears in the list for a while and disappears.
Also it doesn't show UMS as a folder, so we can't browse through it.
Maybe it needs some different renderer file.

Still won't work for me.

I have UMS 3.0.0a5 on Mac (Mountain Lion) and WMP12/VLC2.0.8 on Win7.

UMS just doesn't show up on either of them, also it doesn't seem to recognize
either of them in the network.
There are no renderers found and it doesn't matter in which order I start them.

Also on rare occasion WMP does show up in UMS, but I can't find a trigger for
that. Besides this, even when UMS recognizes WMP, it doesn't show up in WMP, so
I got no advantage of it :)

With my LG TV UMS works great, on my laptop with WMP UMS shows up but it's
empty, no videos, no music, no pictures.

UMS 3.0.0 a5, Windows 7 home premium 64bit SP1, windows media player
12.0.7601.17514
