Filter out apps/games in apps list #1673

Hey there,

I have a lot games installed, about half the apps on my phone are games. It means my list of apps is long and cluttered both when looking for a game to play (not looking for something specific, just want to scroll through all my games and decide what to play from there) and when scrolling through my apps.

I've tried putting all my games in a folder/pop out, but I miss the functionality and readability that comes from having them in the mainlist.

I would love if there was some way to filter out games or apps. So, show everything, show games only, show apps only.

I believe checking if an app is a game should be doable automatically.

I'm picturing either just 2 tab buttons on the right side, something like: Screenshot_20210723-123022_Niagara Launcher

Or, I'm also picturing something like the Spotify library filter: Screenshot_20210723-123255_Spotify

For this one, have the pill buttons fixed at the top. Initially just apps or games. Tap games, and only games are shown. Tap it again and the filter is turned off. Maybe hide the buttons when scrolling down, and show when scrolling up, like a web browser. I'd personally prefer it shown all the time (setting?). Maybe also fix a search bar at the top, above the pill buttons.

In terms of complicating things for the user, I don't think it would. We're not asking them to set anything up because the type is determined automatically and all they're seeing is some new buttons to filter which should be out the way and their function self explanatory. Maybe they'll get a new toggle in settings to turn the whole thing off.

For bonus points in the Spotify pills button implementation, have extra filters, so if I tap games, more filters appear for game types, like puzzle, action adventure, racing, etc. Same for apps, further filter them into social, productivity, shopping, etc.

I am looking for this feature too! I have a OnePlus Phone and there is a system app called "games" in which you can see all the games installed. It adds the games automatically to the app. Right now I need to remove the games manually of Niagra, but making a option to hide games would be awesome.

Some just use game launchers like Google's Play Games which already filters your games

If they implemented this for games they'd have to implement it for other categories too coz games aren't that important for a significant # of Niagara users, nor is the feature necessary for some 🤔

For now one could do rename apps + search

I'd imagine you're thinking something like Smart Launcher's automatic categorisation system. Your concept example wouldn't work though since the alphabet takes up the entire height of the screen depending on where you have your finger.

I personally try to have as many apps as possible in pop-up folders to reduce app list clutter but as a result I won't be able to access it's pop-up for shortcuts and widgets so I understand your frustration.

This is the one issue I have left with Niagara. My app list is just super cluttered with apps I don't use often but can't delete: games I play once in a while, utility apps that I use once a month in specific circumstances for things like my isp app, smart lights, and macro automation, and food apps. Categories are great, but still a little cumbersome to access at the bottom of the app list, and it's a bit annoying to have to go through and manually add an app to a category, then hide it from the list every time I install an app I don't want in my main list.
