STEP 1: PROPOSAL

Short description of the concept or proposed improvements: 
The current soilP module does not account for the impact of plant root exudation on mobilisation of soil phosphorus. It is unable to simulate the higher P use efficiency of the new plant cultivars that have a higher efflux of exudation such as citrate acid. 

Rationale and Justification: 
Adding the impact of root exudation on P availability in the soil will enable APSIM to simulate the improved growth of plantcultivars that have higher citrate efflux from roots and the implications on soil P dynamics. This is one of the objectives in the CSIRO-BAYER project on PUE of new plant traits

Details of the proposed improvements: 
(1) link the potential P supply in each soil layer to the root length density and the P uptake power of roots, and

(2) relate the change in P concentration in the soil solution to the citrate efflux from roots and the efficiency of citrate to solubilise soil P  

Implications for users: 
The new functionablity would be made fully backwards compatible, so would not impact on exisiting users and simulations

Status Update from Enli Wang -

" I thought this has been already implemented in APSIM in the previous release. I will need to update the wheat parameter file for P modeling (no need for coding change). I will try to do this early next year."
