This is a known issue with certain models, notably XPS or Precision 5000-series systems. I do not believe that there is a solution. Performing a full power cycle of the machine will restore normal keyboard brightness control function.
I am using a Precision M4500. Normal keyboard brightness control function is restored as soon as DellFanKeepAlive yields control back to the EC.
"DellFanCmd.exe ec-disable" also causes the problem and "DellFanCmd.exe ec-enable" fixes it.
Normally I can change the screen brightness on my laptop by holding down the Fn key and hitting the up or down arrows. When DellFanKeepAlive version 2.1 has taken control of the fan speed from the EC, these keys no longer work. I can still change the brightness via the Windows 10 action center.
