To simulate & test image2a & 5a, do the following :
1. load savestate "Pokemon Stadium 2 (U) [!].st0" at "load_savestate.jpg" and
press A followed "Up C" and you will see "defence_curl_5a" in action.
2. load savestate "Pokemon Stadium 2 (U) [!].st1" at "load_savestate.jpg" and
press A followed "Up C" and you will see "defence_curl_2a" in action.

Your diagnosis is correct: defence curl uses the same texture as the portrait.
When the issue with portraits will be fixed this issue will be automatically
fixed too.

the same portrait issue happens over pokemon stadium also.
generally the half of the image gets all damaged and the other half ok
(for example the bottom half ok and the other half all damaged)

This is a Pokemon Stadium 2 bug post and if you have a bug in Pokemon Stadium,
create a separate bug post.
