Offer legacy contacts for deceased / inactive users #64352

Open kuropixel opened 2 years ago

kuropixel commented 2 years ago

What

We should offer a way for users to add "legacy contacts", or someone who gets access to a WordPress.com account when someone has become deceased or inactive after a certain amount of time. Both Apple and Google have similar systems in place.

Why

There may be cases where users want to designate someone to have access to their account or site after they become inactive or deceased.

Request on 5271514-zen

How

I would refer to Apple/Google to see how we can potentially implement a system.

I think this is a decent idea. I’m young and got in on the genesis & p2p software early. I have legacy, multiseg, Segwit, and cold storage wallets contract address ownership and verified contract source code I can control any data I log into but I kinda need help. Accessing old wallets any help?

I think this is also a good idea. Perhaps a secondary contact in Account Settings or Security would be valuable. It would also avoid some AR requests

Any chance we can get an update on this? Possibly also expand it to include account memorialization a la Facebook?

Got a similar question here, and this was my response.

The Executor/Personal Representative/Trustee is generally responsible for administering the estate/trust, but transfer of assets may require approval by the court, other beneficiaries, etc. This varies by state/jurisdiction.

Hence, we'd suggest seeking legal counsel in your jurisdiction and confirming which legal document the person (whom you want to transfer the website and account after your death) will need to act on your behalf.

Also, it is beneficial to make sure that the legal documents are clear about your wishes for your property (assets).
