Investors will mentally benchmark your team against the many others that come to them for funding. Based on your input, we've calculated a rough degree of confidence that you can expect from investors on the basis of your team's composition and background:
Deep industry knowledge like yours doesn't come overnight. When approaching investors, highlighting your experience in the industry will explain the advantages you have in understanding your customer problem and translating that insight into product development. Being able to effectively solve the problem for customers is a prerequisite for traction and growth.
Your team’s willingness to work for less than market rate will show investors that you put the venture’s interests first. Most funded co-founders take no salary or compensate themselves below 30% of their market rate salary (i.e. only spending what’s absolutely necessary to survive). Investors appreciate a team that can do a lot with a little.
Investors generally expect some familiarity with the challenges facing startups. One of the best ways to show that your team can run a successful startup is to focus on the milestones you've already achieved, such as a product deployed, making smart early hiring decisions, and achieving traction.
Most ventures rely on their founders to possess a range of complementary skills that enable them to handle all aspects of the business successfully. Investors are strongly interested in the team’s composition (as well as the team members’ commitment), and to secure fundraising you will probably want to supplement your existing skillset with additional members who can close the gaps.
Outside sources of validation for your venture could help you make your case to investors. Consider finding a subject matter expert in your industry to act as an advisor to your team.
Investors see a team’s time commitment as a signal that their project is a venture rather than a hobby. Time investment shows your commitment to success and reflects your co-founders’ ability to bring together and motivate a team. On average, co-founders should be spending at least 30 hours per week on the new venture—and for co-founders with other jobs, this usually means nights and weekends. If one or more members is struggling to contribute this amount of time, consider making them an advisor rather than a co-founder.
