Consultation about HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM #115

Hello, I have studied the tutorial on HXN (https://biosteam.readthedocs.io/en/latest/API/facilities/HeatExchangerNetwork.html), for the HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM, may I ask you the following questions. Thanks for your help. Wish you a good day.

a) Can BioSTEAM meet the Minimum Energy Requirements after heat exchanger network (HXN) (such as Fig.S3 in paper “Sustainable Lactic Acid Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass”)? Or to what extent does the heat exchange network need to be executed before HXN does not continue in BioSTEAM? 1

b) Is there an insufficient number of cold or hot streams in BioSTEAM’s HXN diagram?

c) How to generate heat exchange network diagram in BioSTEAM and which code should be used?

d) Can the HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM be used directly? How to judge whether the proposed HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM is wrong or feasible? Including whether the heat exchanger itself is faulty or not feasible, or whether there is temperature crossover (i.e. temperature difference between hot and cold streams is less than Tmin) or heat transfer through the pinch point?

e) How to determine if there is a problem with HXN diagram given by BioSTEAM? Will there be pinch points crossing or temperature crossing in HXN diagram given by BioSTEAM? Does the BioSTEAM generated HXN diagram automatically take into account temperature crossings or pinch points crossing?

f) For the TEA and LCA results reported in BioSTEAM related articles such as Sustainable Lactic Acid Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass (Fig. 2 to Fig. 5), does it refer to the result before HXN or after HXN? After generating the HXN scheme, do I need to change the original process and re-run according to the HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM? That is, for the TEA and LCA results reported in BioSTEAM related articles (such as Sustainable Lactic Acid Production from Lignocellulosic Biomass) (Fig. 2 to Fig. 5), are these results the results of modeling the process again and run again according to the generated HXN scheme by BioSTEAM?

g) Will the proposed HXN scheme in BioSTEAM automatically take into account industrial design specifications, such as how many degrees of cooling water can not cool how many degrees of heat, or the difference between the inlet and outlet temperature of the heat exchanger must be higher than the specified temperature?

h) Will BioSTEAM give several different HXN schemes? If so, which one should I choose?

i) Do I need to add utilities before BioSTEAM performs HXN? That is, do I need to specify specific utilities for heat exchangers or flash before BioSTEAM performs HXN?

j) Is flash included in the heat exchange network given by BioSTEAM? Or does the heat exchange network given by BioSTEAM only include the heat exchanger and reboiler and condenser of distillation tower?

k) When re-establishing the process according to the execution of the HXN scheme given by BioSTEAM, do I need to draw out the virtual stream for the reboiler or condenser of the distillation tower, because the exit stream at the top or bottom of the tower goes directly into the reboiler or condenser?

Hello, could I trouble you spare some time to look at this problem. Thanks for your help.
