Fix build and some bugs #9

Hi,

This PR contains several kinds of improvements:

  1. Fixes the build on macOS
  2. Fixes some bugs and instances of Undefined Behavior / just otherwise surprising behavior
  3. Fixes some warnings and removes extensive amounts of commented-out code
