Prioritize expression language reliability over lambda #245

If it is expedient because of the bugs, we can drop lambda() from 1.0 entirely but we need what is left of the expression language to be a subset of the 1.5 expression language.

Please let us know ASAP this week so I can pull the examples and documentation that include lambda()

The two bugs that I just fixed (issues #214, #233, #234), were pretty serious and were likely the source of other instability we've been seeing. I'm closing this issue for now---please reopen if needed
