This is an applications for tax relief. You can have both a residential exemption #329 and personal exemption applied toward your tax liability. You can only have 1 personal exemption applied to your tax liability even if you qualify for multiple programs. Assessing applies the personal exemption that saves the taxpayer the most money.

The online personal exemption form covers all possible personal exemptions with the exception of the national guard exemption. Background here: https://www.boston.gov/departments/assessing/how-file-personal-exemption-property-taxes.

The personal exemption is generally available beginning in the late Summer or early Fall each year in paper form only but do become available in electronic form beginning in January (and lasting until the April 1 deadline).

After these apps are filled out and submitted to us our staff reviews them for qualification. There is a workflow process for these docs whereby they are reviewed, scanned into our localized applications, and a decision is rendered by a staff member as to qualification status. Taxpayers will receive a decision letter only if their application is denied, which also allows the taxpayer to submit missing information if applicable.
