Add The One Ring #8

Add into the game The One Ring. When worn, it would make the wearer invisible, but after a fixed number of turns, summon ring wraiths.

Also, while carried, it would periodically incur some negative penalty and have a themed message when it does.

clockfort commented 14 years ago

I suggest power= INVIS stone= "gold" cost= 150 (as per a ring of invisibility) metal= GOLD color= HI_GOLD

An astute player might notice that a ring of invisibility aught to look like a wire ring... but I guess, power to them if they pay that close attention.

It could, just as the amulet of yendor grows warm near magical portals, grow warm in the presence of Nazgul at a certain range.

We could summon the Nazgul to the current level that the poor wearer was on, and he'd have no idea why his ring was glowing warm until it is far too late.

Alternatively, the ring could (with some timer or some random chance) summon nazgul all around the user, as per a scroll of create monster.

The game already has nazgul in it, by the way, and it will automatically extinct them after it spawns 9 of them. (As there are only 9 ring wraiths in Tolkien's fiction)

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

I think I like the idea of summoning them all around the user best.

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

Also, the ring should be an artifact.

Should it be named "The Ring", or "The One Ring".

clockfort commented 14 years ago

Well; from a "does special stuff" perspective, it should be an artifact, but we want it to spawn randomly, so it should be like a non-artifact that gets randomly generated as dungeon items

clockfort commented 14 years ago

also, "The One Ring" sounds best. Or "Sauron's One Ring", etc.

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

It's important there's only ever one of them though.

clockfort commented 14 years ago

I guess. How/where would you generate it though?

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

Artifacts can be randomly generated, there's just usually a really low chance. We can just significantly increase that chance.

artimus commented 14 years ago

is it possible to increase its chance to drop from hobbits? dwarves? really all "h" should be OK.

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

Myself and clockfort have agreed on "The Ring of Power"

eatnumber1 commented 14 years ago

The ring has been implemented. It is always identified.

Hobbits have a 1 in 60 chance of spawning with the ring of power.
If you step into a fire trap while carrying the ring of fire, the
inscription on it will become temporarily readable. If you are a wizard,
minor, or major demon, it will be english. Otherwise, it will be
illegible.

Sometimes spawn Nazgul when wearing the Ring of Power.

The odds of spawning a nazgul are 1 in 300 every turn.
If nazgul will be spawned, the number of nazgul spawned is determined by
the following algorithm.

1 in 5 chance > 1 nazgul will be spawned
if > 1 will be spawned, a random number 2 - 9 will be spawned

The ring is worth 5000 gold

Every step, there is a 1 in 100 chance that you will hear the ring
whispering.

As of commit de36ce09326988192ffdd444b8ff1fb3ed0a36eb, if you are carrying the ring of power, you have a small chance of summoning nazgul.

The odds of spawning nazgul while carrying but not wearing the ring of
power are 1 in 5000 every turn. If nazgul will be spawned, there is a 1
in 100 chance that a random number of nazgul > 1 will be spawned.
Otherwise, only one nazgul will be spawned.
