Code Refactoring Plan #41

After an initial review of the code repository, Sam and I discussed the following refactoring feature ideas to start with:

After a short discussion with Sam, we decided it would be good to set up an intermediate branch (current feature_refactor_ui) to branch off of for all other feature changes (e.g. refactoring training, etc).

I will then send PRs to be reviewed for the various implemented features to this intermediate branch. When this intermediate branch reproduces the results and performance of the main branch (with the OK from Tobias) then I will submit a PR from intermediate to main.

This is basically complete with this PR. And, there will be room for improvement in the next milestone(s). :-)
