Submit a session proposal for GfÖ 2023

Here is the gist of what I just submitted:

• Session title: Ecological knowledge in the open knowledge ecosystem around Wikipedia
• Short title: Ecological knowledge and the Wikipedia ecosystem
• The goal of the session: This goal of this session is fourfold:
  • (i) to provide participants with an overview of the coverage of ecological topics in Wikipedia and its sister sites like Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource and Wikispecies
  • (ii) outline the Wikimedia community processes behind the generation and curation of that content
  • (iii) explore how the Wikimedia workflows interact with those of the community of ecological researchers and practicioners
  • (iv) highlight potential for further interactions
• Consideration of diversity:
  • (1) Examples will be drawn from
  • (a) various branches of ecological research and practice, from invasion biology to urban ecology, restoration ecology and beyond
  • (b) multiple locations from around the world
  • (c) multiple languages
  • (2) Diversity, equity and inclusion efforts of the Wikimedia community will be covered with an eye on similar efforts in ecological contexts.
• Mode of interaction: Participants will be provided with possibilities to work in pairs or small groups while
  • (i) reviewing existing Wikimedia content
  • (ii) making small contributions directly
  • (iii) reviewing examples of each other's contributions
  • (iv) laying the foundation for more comprehensive contributions that leverage the diverse expertise of attendees and their respective networks.

The organizers just got back to me asking for session requirements. Here are my responses:

• minimal number of participants: 5
• maximal number of participants: 50

Under "Other", I wrote the following: The active participation part works best if each participant (or at least someone in each group for the groupwork) has access to (i) a web browser, preferably via their laptop or on-site computer (using smartphones is technically possible but not very convenient) and (ii) the web and (iii) sufficient electricity.

They now also asked about timing, and I responded that I can adjust to anything between 90 min and several hours.

They informed me today that the session has been accepted. It will run from 9-12 on Sep 11.
