Creative Commons liscenses / URIs in Metadata Records #42

Why are You Reporting an Issue

Discuss Issue or Ask Question

This month, we're trying to implement standardized rights for our objects. Is anyone sharing creative commons URIs in your metadata records? We're trying to figure out how to do conditional logic and how to model these as MODS.

If you're not using URIs, are you using creative commons strings at all? That too could be useful.

@carolynfrunyon & @bonefas , mentioning you here because I think you may have some stuff. Eventually, I'll pull everyone's data and see what is there, but honestly it'd be helpful for people to just share some examples / samples.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

Here's a QDC record in the public domain that advantages both rightstatements.org and CC.

@carolynfrunyon, thanks so much!

bonefas commented 7 years ago

We generally do not put the CC URI's in the metadata record - just a vague reference to our "Legal page", where they can be found. However, we have not been entirely consistent, and here is a record I found that does put the URI in the record. We just use dc:rights .

oops, stripped out the > and < on the opening tags. But you get the idea.

carolynfrunyon commented 7 years ago

@bonefas, if you prepend your code with this, ```, it should format correctly. It took me a few minutes to look it up and get it right :)

bonefas commented 7 years ago

Thanks, @markpbaggett!

So our reason for not putting CC URIs in the dc:rights field is so we avoid needing to update the fields if/when there is a new version of the license. (As you can see, we are a couple of versions behind here). Although there may be a persistent URI on their end that I'm unaware of.

markpbaggett commented 7 years ago

@carolynfrunyon and @bonefas, I wanted to update you on this.

We actually had one collections with CC licenses that we added to DPLA in the July harvest. I wanted you to know how these show up. Here's an example:

https://dp.la/item/43251671e171a4b4f6120aba9911306e

You'll see it has the standardized statement, but no string. Also, the current DPLA interface does not parse the RDF document so no CC badge appears. Just wanted you to know what these would look like in DPLA.

carolynfrunyon commented 7 years ago

That's what standardized rights statements look like in our repository, however, the link RightsStatements.org or CC URI opens in a new tab. I wonder if that is possible? It could help folks from losing their place as they are conducting research in DPLA.

Here's an example: http://digital-collections.library.utc.edu/digital/collection/p16877coll20/id/22/rec/4
