Title

Gesamt - a digital participatory opera

Short paragraph for context (what you will do) or if you are offering to be a part of the collective & join other projects, what you can offer etc.

We are collaborating with colleagues and students from NSCAD on an ongoing relationship about the relevance of digital media in contemporary art production. One response in Canada has been to design an 'opera', reflecting Wagner's ambitions for this medium as the 'total art form' or Gesamtkunstwerk. This will be our response to this provocation, to create our own interactive, participatory analogue and digital opera, staged and housed in the Tate's Exchange Space.

How will the public get involved (invited participants, targeted audiences i.e schools, groups)

Means of participation (for students and the public) will include: all kinds of performance including singing, reading from scripts, engaging with remote inputs from Canada, voice modulation changes through software (ref Jennet Thomas), costume in the broadest sense, projections, various interactions and inputs via social media etc + collaborating with recent PTBM graduate Ellie Power and her use of digital characters in relation to AI and gaming.

Type of event it is (workshop, intervention, gathering, performance etc)

Key words to help identify themes

Gesamtkunstwerk, digital, opera, participation, interaction, broadcast, projection, engagement, construction, costume, performance

Please ensure your proposal responds/relates to most of the below Tate Exchange Principles :

How is art making a difference to peoples lives and society?

  1. Inspire diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally with new ways of engaging with Tate’s collection and art more broadly
  2. Invite and enable the audience to become collaborators in helping shape the programme, activities and outcomes.
  3. Embody the values of openness, generosity, risk and trust
  4. Make a connection to the annual Tate Exchange theme: Exchange
  5. Explore new ways of thinking about art, society, the museum and its changing relation to the public
