Proposal of disallowing gambling on servers #2414

The Issue

Currently, a lot of DarkRP or similar-based servers are using gambling addons where you can gamble your in-game currency. At first glance, this sounds fine and should not be an issue for most people.

But if we also take into account that most of them support purchasing in-game currency with real money and have a lot of children in the player base, this will be an issue we should think about.

I still see players gambling all day on some servers; even if they don't spend real money or get any real money in return, this will still influence the player into gambling more and probably even getting addicted to real gambling in the future which is a problem with minors.

In my opinion, servers that do gambling with entities clearly made for gambling should at least be heavily regulated, if not banned. While we cannot ban the random mechanic itself (because other real mechanics are based on randomness most of the time), we should still consider limiting the usage of anything that would be counted as gambling in the real world.

Based on the facepunch server guidelines (d), gambling should technically be already disallowed as garrysmod is rated for children or at least <18 in most countries. This guideline could be made easier to understand on the gmod server operator rule page to be clear for everyone. Otherwise we should consider adding a new rule related to gambling.

For everyone else, please vote up or down if you agree, and also comment on what you think about this idea or what your experience was.

For me personally these mechanics are really only to exploit people in some way or another.

Edit: there was a discussion on the gmod discord about that, you can go to the start of it here for context why i made this proposal in the first place. (You need to be on the garrysmod discord to see it)

Sorry rubat in case this is not the place, but i think "garrysmod requests" should also be able to contain this stuff ^^

GMod carries with it the same age rating as its basegame, Half Life 2, by the way. M17+ ESRB in the US, PEGI 15 in the UK, and everywhere else in between.

That being said, there are legal repercussions to be had - same reason Rockstar has to limit the use of the ingame Diamond Casino for GTA 5 in certain countries. (read: you can't without a VPN)

Something like, "if you can purchase the currency you are using to gamble in-game with, or are able withdraw the currency being gambled then thats an offense" would make more sense to me.

While I'm not super big of the idea to regulate servers beyond the surface level of "no nazis", I can see how this is somewhat harmful to children (it was harmful to me personally as a child).

Great proposal btw, we need more administration issues posted here they're fascinating and a good way to bring up issues within the community.

I think you are actually wrong and here is a picture to proof it Screenshot_20240619_061940_Google.jpg
