It seems that the portable generator does not use the maximum output cap of its configuration. If something (a player) steps into the wires (simulating a current spike) when the generator is full of energy, the wire connected to this and all the way to the heavy output melt. It can be reproduced by (over)filling the gas generator with gasoline and connecting MV wires to it. Step into the wires to generate the spike.
Maybe think of a standard approach of simply connecting IE connectors to it or make sure the transmitted energy is capped by some internal buffer.
