I was not actually aware of that coding system, no one has requested that mapping! So I see it involves a few layers, with each containing a code that could be translated to a FoodOn food category, packaging category, and "food related process indicator codes" - https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ora/pcb/tutorial/index.cfm?action=tutorial.lesson4a FoodOn should definitely match concepts here such that we can offer an equivalent bag of terms for each generated FDA food code.
wonderful ! This is also quite similar to the mechanism of the coding for FoodEX2 facets
Discussed on FOODON call today, where we established a new sheet in the robot templates file for FOODON qualities with mappings to the EFSA FoodEX2 vocabulary, the FDA Product Codes, and the USDA FDC vocabulary. Hopefully we can work to harmonize all three systems, ideally have foodon map out to the other 3.
Sheet is at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VJtz4m67tdUNDqRe3m1Okdxll64nTR46GSvCOmb0APE/ where authorized FoodOn curators can take on curating food quality terms. As we go through each 3rd party term we have to determine whether it is indeed a quality or a process or a material resulting from a process; and likely add respective terms to fill in the continuum.
From Ruth Timme (FDA): Has anyone at FDA requested that the FDA Product Code be added to FoodON? It would be incredible useful to have all the Food-related components ontologized and synonymized with the other agency coding systems – it might live under FOODON:03400289
