lemoness commented 11 years ago

@Aiseant Oooh, cool! It might need a little bit of tweaking depending on what constraints we come up with, but I really like it and think we can hopefully find a use for it.

Hairstyles for customization, by me (except for the original BQ bangs and Alex's awesome current hair for the female avatar) hairstyles customization sample

And art from the old thread:

@jjjesse made a floating Mystic: dlmystic And a partially-completed dragon: dldrag

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

A chest : chest

Because chest are always useful ^^ I've read trello that mentionned kinda quest, but didn't find one making a list of art required for those. Chests will be needed for treasures :D

I'm always confused with dimensions. It seems so small here, I'll do it bigger

lefnire commented 11 years ago

Oh wow that's very good :o I want that for my home :)

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

Thanks @lefnire !

I'm glad you like it :) But if you want one for your house, you'll need this : key

I just realized that the favicon for habitrpg is a chest ... maybe it would be better to use it as a base, I'll try.

Shaners commented 11 years ago

Yea you'll need to apply 3x pixel zoom for most graphics and compare to the size of the NPCs. I suspect if that chest was at 3x pixel zoom it'd actually be a huge chest. Just something to consider!

lemoness commented 11 years ago

Could be a giant background for our eventual armory! @Aiseant I would love to see more of your stuff at the 3x zoom :)

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

Aaaaannndd ... this is where everyone realize what kind of newbie I'm at pixelart because I have no fracking idea of what pixel zoom can be \o/ However, I did notice that my pixelart style looks different than current ones on the website, so I assume it's realated ...

Can someone please explain me what you need me to do ? Is it that I have to redraw but instead of 1px at a time, I should have 9 (a square of 3 by 3) ?

In this case, it means multiply the size by 3, so the chest will be bigger, indeed :)

About armory, there is a post on the forum talking about a wardrobe that inspired me, it's my next work

lemoness commented 11 years ago

Yes! If you compare your pixel art to ours, you'll see that we are actually using a 3x3 square. That's why they look so much bigger!

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

hehe, no need to redraw ! I like Gimp sooo much !

I tried a little bit of shade on the key, that wasn't really visible on the small version, but that just feels wrong on the large one, so I removed it slowly. Keep the one you prefer.

My gosh, I was already complaining about how small I had to work with, and now you're saying that I have three time less than I thought ... oh my.

Shaners commented 11 years ago

I wouldn't try working with 3x3 sized pixels because you might create pixel alignment issues and more work for yourself. It's just a matter of working with 1x1 sized pixel brush and when you've finished the art export with 300% zoom using nearest neighbor (or an equivalent.) When working if you want to preview it's simply a matter of zooming to 300%. This makes it so all of the 3x3 stuff is just done automatically for you perfectly and since your source is 1x in the future you'll be able to export at any other pixel zoom ratio if you ever needed to. If you are saving your sources with 3x3 pixels it can be a lot harder to convert that back to 1x or say 4x.

Been working on some saddles but not sure how well they are turning out item-saddle

Thing on the left looks like a piece of bacon right now

Shaners commented 11 years ago

item-saddle002 This one looking better but a bit big.

lemoness commented 11 years ago

@Shaners OOOH, that last one is definitely the best, but I am concerned about the size. It's way, way bigger than everything else that we'll be selling in the token store, and I don't think that will work. Can you try to recreate the shape, just smaller?

Shaners commented 11 years ago

People kept thinking the tavern keep had a large piece of bacon on his table... Now he does, gotta give people what they want! tavern-bacon

Shane. Shane, I'm laughing so hard, you don't even know. I am sitting alone in the living room making choked squeaky noises and pounding the cushion with my hand. Any moment now, one of my roommates is going to creep in and give me a look of horror and concern.

lefnire commented 11 years ago

yaaaaaaa! those are fantastic! We're starting to develop our own little pokemon system - with these badges, pets, and mounts - they're all developing personalities

lemoness commented 11 years ago

@Aiseant The badges are wonderful! I love them. And to answer your Trello question, yes, this is where the badge and achievement art goes!

Now, the chest still doesn't have quite the right proportions... is that x3 zoom? It still looks a little bit small. I love the way it looks, though! You're massively talented!

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

Thanks for your encouragements !

A scroll, or kinda, maybe for trello card 235 (https://trello.com/card/spells-scrolls/50e5d3684fe3a7266b0036d6/235) scroll

@lemoness : you're right, it was x2 zoom (something went wrong somewhere), I edited my post with the right one

lemoness commented 11 years ago

Great scroll! And yup, the chest looks perfect now. We can use that as a background for the armory, maybe!

StanLindsey commented 11 years ago

Well we have a scroll for the future quests feature!

lefnire commented 11 years ago

Huge fan of everything on this ticket. I'll also be putting in @Aiseant's badges the moment I can, we can now have achievements for each animal line - fantastic.

I'm concerned about the scroll, chest, key, and saddle - they're all quite large, especially the chest. IMO everything should be roughly same size as our eggs, so we can display them in a consistent modal, and lay them out in your inventory in a consistent grid. What are everyone's thoughts here?

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

Hi @lefnire

Key was just for the fun, I intented to make some more, of different kind but never started. I will use dimensions you like.

About this fact, it should be great if we had somewhere a canvas for each type of art. I'm just speaking for myself, but I downloaded all the sheet sprites I found and try to stay in the right dimensions, but it can be quite random. For instance, I used eggs as a model so the scroll should be roughtly the same size ... should be ... It ended up larger, as I see now. For badges for instance, I'm working with the golden piece at the background and use it to keep the right dimensions (at least, I used to, now I learnt those ^^) I saw some infos about dimensions reading through trello and github, but would it be possible to condense everything somewhere, like : Max for pets : w1_h1 -- Min for pets : w2_h2 etc Would definitively helps people wanting to make one particular design, like a boss or something.

Chest is too big, I couldn't agree more, I have to re-draw it (using the last design, I think ?). I didn't think it'll be part of the inventory and then should be of items dimensions, it was more for a background or header picture (ok ... it was more for fun, because I wanted to draw a chest. Ok) Same as before, if it's needed item size, I can do it but isn't the favicon chest a little bit better ?

lefnire commented 11 years ago

Actually, you're abs. right. Different things have different roles, so may not need similar dimensions. We should figure out where everything will go first.

Ok, so chest - we should decide, is it going to be a drop that can be unlocked, thereby stored in inventory? or will it be something else which can be displayed as large in a modal? I suppose chest is currently a bit of a wild card, so you can ignore my previous statement on shrinking it, especially since you're still playing around with it

Scroll & saddle will definitely go in inventory, so IMO those should be egg-size

Badges can remain as-is for the time being, since they're displayed in a different location. Depends on whether we're going to do an overhaul after all (@Shaners?). Thing is, now we have much more at our disposal thanks to @Aiseant's awesome work :) :) I vote stay

Aiseant commented 11 years ago

You're welcome, I just love to make other people work more :D :D

lemoness commented 11 years ago

I didn't visualize the chest as being a drop or an item, but rather as a piece of background art, potentially behind a potential Armory Keeper NPC. I like it so much!!

I agree 100% about making the dimensions more clear. We've since added the pet/mount guidelines to the OP of the Pets/Mounts thread, and as other things come up, we'll do that too.

I am so excited to get all of these achievements!!

baconsaur commented 11 years ago

I just came across this: https://trello.com/card/background-zone/50e5d3684fe3a7266b0036d6/111 And I'd be really interested in making some backgrounds! I love drawing scenery. Are there already any existing background samples to follow, or are there any specific requirements/constraints to follow for this, like a particular size or perspective?

Shaners commented 11 years ago

@baconsaur check out the BQ sprite sheet for BQs background scenery. You could also see https://f.cloud.github.com/assets/3317882/169397/6897a70a-7a1d-11e2-96b6-ddba3edd3546.jpg and https://f.cloud.github.com/assets/3618567/169159/7a61aebc-7a14-11e2-94cc-db2a93198c2d.png for some possible ways background scenery could be incorporated into Habit.

No specific requirements or constraints other than it should appear somewhat like the BQ stuff. The thing to keep in mind here is that not everyone wants this feature and it is a non-priority task so who knows when / if it'll ever be live. A lot want to stick with the minimal clean look, could solve that easily with a toggle though.

caycefischer commented 11 years ago

I have a request, intrepid pixelworkers! I brought this up at the Hangout last time, the fact that it would be really nice to have an alternate version of the sprites, where the art is just centred in the sprite box, instead of positioned how it should be. Things like equipment, hair, etcetera. This makes the inventory, stable, and basically everything where we need a nice grid so much easier.

Can anyone help me out with that?

Shaners commented 11 years ago

Oh I thought the opposite was true? If centered you'd have to do the positioning with code which could be vary per item, even for things like weapons.

Centered version can be made but do you want any white space around the assets? If so how much and how would someone go about determining what the center was for uneven assets?

This would be an alternate spritesheet for just situations like the store and inventory, not the avatar and stuff. That's the thing, for the centered sprites I wouldn't need to position anything with code, since it's a clean grid. I'm trying to solve this issue here, where the items aren't centered in their box:

screen shot 2013-05-28 at 10 34 09 am

The sprite box is 90px by 90px, right? What would be ideal is a version of the sprites where the art stays the same size as it is now, but is centered in that box (instead of in position, like the hat being at the top, armor further down, etcetera).

I can't think of an automated way to do that, sadly – but I think I might just start making one and see how it goes. How long can it take, right?

Shaners commented 11 years ago

So you just want a centred version of shop_sprites.png? Or all pixel art? Hair wouldn't be in the store or inventory no? Could just alter the CSS cropping to get centred images. Alter the height of the crop based on quick measurements in irfranview.

Not sure there is much I can do right now because the original assets are in a bit of purgatory between the gender specific sprite sheets and the new one Alex made. So I wouldn't be too sure which to make. If you needed the white space around everything it may involve creating a little photoshop script to centre things.

caycefischer commented 11 years ago

Most of the pixel art, yeah. Definitely shop sprites, pets, and hair (for the user settings). Shop (and then pets) are much higher priority than the rest though.

Good point, it wouldn't require a new image, just new css! Good idea.

Shaners commented 11 years ago

How important is the white space around each piece for what you're doing? You won't be able to get that as easily with altering the CSS. End game it makes little sense to have two versions of all the art one centred and one not, but it isn't the end of the world.

caycefischer commented 11 years ago

I think you're right – I'll do some experimenting and see what I can come up with. I might just make specific, targeted css edits in the places I need them.

My "OCD" about the uneven spacing is killing me ;)
