Agree with order of rows. Need to consider where in the interface the other suggestions should be. Eg: where should a 'contribute' call to action be - and is the 'plus' button to add a place not enough? The explanation of layers should be somewhere general, but not fully spelled out in the pop up as it uses too much space. Could be in an exclamation icon pop up or something.
Lest start with changing the order of rows.
Have made the order changes. The remaining parts for this issue are:
These comments relate to the box that comes up when a user clicks on a pin. It contains information such as placename, state, lat, long, etc. Users talked at length about having more context given here to help them understand the site. Users talked about the wikipedia upfront value proposition: “The online encyclopaedia that anyone can edit” and finding a similar phrase for TLCMap.
Users found the explanation of Layers on the advanced search result really useful and thought a stripped down version could be used in the table of information:
“Note: Layers are contributed from many sources by many people or derived by computer and are the responsibility of the contributor. Layers may be incomplete and locations and dates may be imprecise. Check the layer for details about the source. Absence in TLCMap does not indicate absence in reality. Use of TLCMap may inform heritage research but is not a substitute for established formal and legal processes and consultation.”
They also thought a ‘call to action’ would help explain the site. An extra row that appears as the first row of the table (after the placename). “Know more about this place or other places? Contribute to TLCMap.org here…” (takes you to sign-up/login). Different background and bold to highlight it.
The “Datasource” (NCG/ANPS) could have the same colour coding and rounded corners as the checkboxes in the search interface. This reinforces the link between the two. Could also double down and have the same colour as the background for the entire element.
The following rows should always be last because they don’t really help a user understand what each of these placemarks are about. Don’t want them to scroll to see that there are sources and external links and dates etc. Rows that should be last are:
● Lat ● Long ● Created At ● Updated At
Rows that should be first:
● Placename ● Description ● Data source (because this is important in the front page interface as it is currently designed).
