edit: actually in the context of Half-Life I think it's from physics, the symbol for "radioactive half life" is the lambda Greek letter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambda#Lower-case_letter_%CE%BB

I like the half life idea too being a counter strike lover lmao
