The changes to exceptions look good. Any reason not to do the same thing around line 111-112 where the current exception handler just prints an 'oops' and keeps processing?

@donsizemore - there are three old PRs here that I'll merge if you update them to remove the conflicts (assuming they're still relevant which I think is true). I think the issue for all of them is just the move of the global files to a subdir.
