I'm comfortable with "the conversation becomes lively" style here and in similar cases. It's fairly literal but works OK.
A structure such as "for the conversation to become lively" actually seems more awkward to me.
FWIW, I'd personally prefer a definition like "for the conversation to become lively" with expl
g_type
over a definition like "the conversation becomes lively" as well, the former style feels more in line with what I would expect from a dictionary definition.

We discussed this several years back (IIRC, on the mailing list, but I can't seem to find it) and this gloss is the result of the consensus we arrived at back then, but to me it looks more awkward and less obvious than the alternative I was pushing for back then as well,
"for the conversation to become lively"
If the consensus is still in favor of the current formatting then fine, but I thought I'd give it a shot considering it's been some numbers of years.
