Nitrogen report - deposition data #1

I try with an issue here as well - hope that works

Europe: As I understood it you are OK extracting deposition time series based on EMEP data USA: Data can be found here: K:\Prosjekter\langtransporterte forurensninger\O-23300 - ICP-WATERS - HWI\Faglige rapporter\2020 report\Deposition data\US. In the readme file there is a suggestion of how to estimate dry deposition for the first period. There is also a link to the most recent data in that file. Let me know if it would be useful with help from someone else here Canada: We await input from Julian

Generally we only need total N deposition Use activity 10300-D for this

Regarding the EMEP data, I'm familiar with accessing the netCDF data here, but it looks as though gridded data are only available back to 2000. Do you know if data exist for the 1990s as well?

Also, looking at the descriptions for EMEP's deposition variables at the bottom of the link above, am I right in thinking that Total N deposition should be calculated as:

WDEP_OXN + WDEP_RDN + DDEP_OXN_m2Grid + DDEP_RDN_m2Grid

?

The notebook here processes data for Europe and the USA for the period from 2000 to 2016 (note that I've switched to a new repository - icpw2 - as the original is becoming a bit of a behemoth).

With a bit of luck, there's an interactive "time slider" for the EMEP map - please let me know if it doesn't work for you.

All the download steps for these datasets are performed automatically by the script (the EMEP data comes from Thredds; the USA data from TDEP). I hope that, with a bit of tidying, this notebook will provide a fairly flexible template for downloading deposition data in the future too.

Results so far in CSV format are here, but I'll check them again next week.

I'll take a look at the calculations for the 1990s for the USA next week too. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for Europe during this time period.

Gridded data from EMEP for the 1990s exist, but they may be on a coarser grid (50x50 km2). I could not find it on the EMEP page either, but have asked Hilde Fagerli.

The calculation looks correct

Great that you have come so far with the script already! It will certainly be useful later as well. The time slider works fine. Note that some of the NFCs may submit new coordinates for their sites, so this will in any case not be the final output

After some consultation: EMEP does not provide data before 2000 (due to this and that). But data exist. These are not direct EMEP data, but aligned with EMEP (long story). Max has the data, but is not keen to provide the full European grid. But - he offers to extract the data we need based on coordinates. So - I said we would get back to him when we have an updated list of sites with coordinates (some countries have re-submitted coordinates under the current call)
