Aristotle was not a good egg but Pythagoras seems nice (see Morgan, n.d.), and he also seems to acknowledge emotions, pleasure and pain in animals (Huffman, 2018).
Plutarch was a fervent vegetarian (Newmyer, 1995).
A section on the Buddhist view that "animal souls [...] are believed to have equal status with human souls" (Shin, 2019: 271).
Aquinas and Kant might need stories, as "[they] were quite explicit in forbidding animal cruelty on the grounds that if such behavior was condoned in society, the perpetrators would be likely to advance to abuse of humans" (Rollin, 2006: 286; Rollin's paper might inspire many more stories!).
