Title
The Assyrian Dictionary
Date or Period π
2400 BC because it includes vocabulary from then, I think? (See Wilford, 2011).
Elevator Pitch
The Babylonian "Urra=hubullu" collects word definitions and their links to law, literature, trade and everyday life.
Justification
Possibly world's first encyclopedia!
Unformed Thoughts
The work put into transcribing the ancient tablet for the modern world took ninety years and resulted in The Assyrian Dictionary of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago (Roth et al., 2010).
The distinction between dictionaries and encyclopedias makes little sense at this point in history. However, the spirit of preserving knowledge in a format for others to access β even millenia into the future βis certainly relatable.
