Examples:
Granting a soul based on specific kills, I do this in Cataclysm via the butchery system but it's one of my LEAST favorite parts of Cataclysm.
Consuming mana for attacking a type of monster, without using cumbersome drug or attack-based effects.
XP system that rewards attributes or talents because of metrics based on what the player has done. Bombastic Perks in DDA IIRC does something like this.
