having tried some other desktop managers, each other one I tried with also ran into this (Steam). I now wonder if the common thread might not be the desktop manager but whether nvidia drivers were enabled (as they were not in my Gnome setup)...

disabling nvidia videoDrivers did in fact make this error go away for KDE as well.
