The app doesn’t let me open the .gba file from any gba game.

SameBoy is an emulator for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy games, hence it cannot emulate GBA games.

Why is there an "Game Boy Advance" model when choosing which to emulate?

It's for emulating Game Boy Color games as if they run on a Game Boy Advance. Some Game Boy Color games, such as Shantae, has exclusive features when running on a GBA.
