Summary: Running build 151 of the rhythm experiment on the newer Mac Operating
systems (OS 10.7 and later), we find the sound cuts out mid-trial. This
typically occurs for only a few trials within an experiment (and not in every
run of the experiment). When this happens, oftentimes the following trial will
be entirely silent. After this, the sound returns at the start of later trials.
This issue sometimes occurs multiple times within a single experiment.
I’ve attached a properties file that we used in the testing (note – we tested this with speedMode=false, but in principle this should work fine with speedMode enabled, which makes testing a lot faster). I am also attaching a zip file with notes and logs from each of the runs referenced above, as well as a summary of the issue in a Word document.
Also - just to clarify this is the most critical issue we are facing, since I
have purchased 3 new laptops for use in our off-site testing. These are
running 10.8, and so we are currently unable to do offsite testing due to the
silence issue (which came up on 8/11 runs combining the 10.7 and 10.8 testing).
We have been invited to test at the major international percussion conference
in Indianapolis in mid-Nov, and we are set to do a “trial run” at the
University of Toronto on Oct 25th. Therefore this is both important and
time-sensitive, so I’m trying to get all this info in ASAP.

Basically, this issue appears to be a systematic issue dealing with Java,
Apple, and MIDI. We did manage to reproduce the sound dropping, and implement a
partial solution.
Summary of current solution:
- Download and install SimpleSynth, which is included in the DropBox folder.
- Start SimpleSynth, and optionally add a midi sound bank, then let it run in
the background.
- Then use the build labeled 'RhythmExperiment-g.zip' (it must be started after
SimpleSynth, so the program can find this extra synthesizer). In the setup
screen find the device IDs for Gervill and SimpleSynth, using the "List and
Test devices" button and then clicking "List MIDI Devices". Specify Gervill as
the tone synth and SimpleSynth as the tap synth. (Tap source can be specified
as well if you are using an external device for tapping).
With this setup, we have not been able to reproduce the cutout through many
trials.
Additional notes about working to fix this issue are included in the attached
file.
