Thank you for the feedback, we have added this to our backlog!
Hey @ibebbs - We had discussed this internally a couple of years ago and made the determination at the time not to pursue open source. However, I think it's been long enough that we should revisit this question to see if our stance would be the same. Specifically, we'd likely only be able to open source the .NET implementations of our controls (at least initially), as the bulk of the code in the WebVIew2 Runtime is the same as the Edge browser, which while technically open source, don't allow easily searching the code or accepting external contributions.
That would be a great start @champnic . We'd welcome any discussions in this area. Please let me know if there's anything we could assist with, or advise on.
Hi,
Would Microsoft consider open-sourcing WebView2?
We use WebView2 extensively and often encounter issues which we would likely be able to resolve or workaround ourselves if we could see the underlying implementation. Additionally, should we find the cause of an issue in WebView2 code, we would happily contribute a fix back to the WebView2 team in the form of a pull request.
Obviously there are costs associated with maintaining an open source repository but an open-source approach seems to have been spectacularly successful for the dotnet platform to which WebView2 could be an amazing addition. Furthermore, while the WebView2 team are doing an admirable job of addressing issues, allowing contributions from outside the core team might help quell the deficit between opened and closed issues.
I'm sure this is something you have probably considered internally but hopefully having an issue to track against might help spur further conversation.
Thanks!
