** This is an idea for an archeological event, which takes place in a system filled Barren worlds.
History
An unknown race in history hat the desire to create an utopia for themselves.
And in order to do so they created a sort of nanobot swarm, which would terraform a system into a garden of eden for life itself.
The plan was simple, Phase 1: nanobots would disassemble everything in the system, while digitizing every person and animal, Phase 2 remake the system into utopia, and then recreate all organics.
The process started, and all seemed to be fine, until the unexpected happened... Mass hysteria.
Doubt has popped up in the population, that they might never be recreated again after being deconstructed.
In attempt to save their culture, force-fields are thrown up that keep the nano-swarm at bay.
This halted the advance of the nano-swarm, and so it could never complete phase 1.
This resulted in the swarm never getting to phase 2.
Over time the upper layers of the nanobot planets degraded, giving the illusion of sand.
Within the force-fields, the alien culture remained, but each force-field was isolated, and the aliens were unable to uphold their cultural and technological edge, being isolated in small groups. (they might even have evolved).
The start
This is an excavation /anomaly, which revolves around a precursor race who has met their unfortunate end, or so it would seem.
When entering the system, the first thing the player might notice is that there's simply no interesting worlds to be found, with every planet being barren and boring.
Quickly after doing some research however, oddities are found, the sand of the planets are actually all broken nanobots, also some perfect huge orbs of impenetrable force-fields the size of mountains dot the landscapes of the barren worlds across the system, this will start an event chain.
The excavation steps
One
A scientist is assigned, and he and his team will do a thorough survey of the planet, discovering that what was thought to be sand, was actually nanobots, instilling fear, but also interest.
It is noted that erosion destroyed the upper layer of nanobots, however digging might bring them to the dormant "still alive" part of the nano-swarm.
there is however the very real possibility that reactivating it might result in harm to the crew, or the entire empire.
Results vary, advised to bring a high ranking researcher, because mistakes might kill the researcher
Two (successful path)
The digging was a success, samples have been made of the swarm, and its purpose is being extracted.
The first thing that was obvious is that the planets itself are absorbed by the swarm, so the team was convinced that it was a weapon.
It was noted however, that the orbs found on the planet, are active containment fields, keeping the swarm out, and this might be a key to understanding what has happened.
Choices:
This is obviously a weapon, take the findings, and leave this doomed place
This is obviously a weapon, lets see what it does in a contained environment.
Three
In the last few weeks many reports have come in, and none of them made sense.
it seems that the swarm proved more hostile then expected, it broke through two barriers of the multi stage isolation, dessintegrating a few assistants in the process.
But this was an acceptable loss, and it did offer us great insight to the containment fields, enabling us to soon find out what happens within planet force-fields.
The reports that came after however became more and more disheartening, as sounds could be heared from within the containment.
Upon closer inspection, it appears that those were voices, asking to be released from containment, the assistants voices.
The containment itself appears to be filled with breathable air, even though the nano-swarm was kept in hard vacuum.
Choices:
The nanobots seem to be learning, his is obviously a trap, destroy the containment
Interesting, observe the 'new' assistants behaviors
Four
Many reports came in the following weeks, it appears that alien life forms are still holed up within the force-fields, and we have no way of knowing if the barriers protect the aliens from the swarm, or if they were separated from them on purpose.
This was followed by more panicked reports, as it seems that the resurrected assistants, supposedly scared of being locked in with the nano-swarm, tried to break out, and were able to breach containment in the process.
In the final report, it was noted that they were able to isolate the lab from the main nano-warm, however, this means that the lab, and all its employees, are completely lost.
choice:
What horror, no ship is to ever set foot in this system again.
Send in more personnel
Five
A miracle, when the personnel set foot in the lab, they stepped into a garden full of plants that were originally used for air recycling.
Even more amazing was that they were greeted by all the researchers, being in a state of unbelief themselves.
They speculated that the swarms intention is to digitize everything it touches, and then terraform everything into a paradise for biological species.
However, for this to happen, all connected nodes of the swarm needs to have completed its job of absorbing everything first.
The force-fields on the surface might be blocking this process, and who knows what could happen when those obstacles are removed.
With the researchers back on the job, they were able to lift the veil to see what happens within the orbs and it appears that small groups of aliens are still living in isolation within each force-field.
Those groups have regressed back into a medieval society, and are living their lives separated from the entire universe, imprisoned by the force-fields they've probably set up themselves.
Choices:
Turn of the force-fields, lets see what happens when the swarm completes its job.
Thousands of isolated cultures must be protected, reinforce the force-fields, and study their cultural differences.
Six
The force-fields have been turned off, and the aliens look in shock and horror as their entire universe just collapsed around them.
This fear only lasted shortly though, since the nanobots, after eons of being dormant, slowly came to life.
Within minutes their cities are overwhelmed and overflowing with nanobots, and after the last remaining vestiges have dissapeared into the colorless mass, the entire planet seems to come to a halt.
After minutes of dead silence, the planet came to life again, and life sprouted from the colorless earth, breathable atmosphere pumped out of all cracks, and life was formed within seconds.
Within hours a message from somewhere on the planet comes in.
“We are the /name/, and we are curious about your presence here.
We are equally curious about the appearance of primitive kin in our mids.
The state of our star and the universe around it, suggest that an eternety has passed since we started the transformation.
So i believe i have your people to thank for finishing our dream started long ago. Whatever your reason may have been, know that the /name/ will be there for you, if you need us.”
