This affects me too.
Also, uninstalling bumblebee and nvidia-current & nvidia-settings makes composition fails, like there is not 3d acceleration and the intel driver is not loaded.
Same here.
Same problem on Asus 1215n
You take a mirror and you put it in front of the screen. So normally you can read in the mirror. You open a terminal and you type the command (it is very slow and you must wait a while) :
sudo dpkg - configure-a
The installation of Bumblebee was incomplete and you must resume the reading continues in the mirror.
This happened to me all the time when I install the deb's repository, but this does not happen if you install it with:
sudo apt-get install bumblebee
sorry for the command, it is :
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Hi, same problem here (ASUS K53S). Running the command you suggested did nothing and exited immediately
I confirm. Also it doesn't login in Unity notebook K53SV when i try to login in ubuntu classic mode it logs in but everything is upside down. Letters get changed. And not all menu points can be accessed. For example i cannot access turn off computer. So i have to press power button for several seconds for restart.
In my xorg.conf.nvidia it is set to CRT-0
Bumblebee installed on a clean system.
I am having these issues as well, unity has failed to boot or manually load since this last update, I can still use ubuntu classic... but prefer unity. I also have an ASUS 1215N which was working great before this last installed update.
When I manually launch unity from the recovery console I get scrambled and upside down screen layouts.
As of this morning, I have the same problem on my MSi FX620DX, with GeForce GT 540M, running Kubuntu 11.04. When desktop effects are enabled using kwin and OpenGL, all windows, icons, and text are displayed upside down and backwards.
I think this might be a driver issue, upstream from bumblebee, but just in case it isn't. I thought I should add my report here.
For me it is working and the installation which was interrupted goes on with this command. And the best after that I can read my screen without a mirror, lol ! But I had a problem because Bumblebee was working before I make some changes and now it doesn't, and all the time I get :
jp@jp-laptop:~$ optirun64 glxgears [sudo] password for jp:
and glxgears (or any other application) is not launched.
jpiebrig, man don't flood here plx. I really don't understand what ur 10 posts are about. Problem reported. What u trying to atchieve? u suggesting fix or what? i didn't manage to fix anything with ur flood. If u offer fix say it so that people can understand what u are talking about.
Hi...
try rerunning bumblebee-configuration... if it still doesn't work after that, please try to run:
update-alternatives --force --set x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf ldconfig update-alternatives --display x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
and send me the output
Reconfiguration ... no change All packages in the PPA completely removed and reinstalled from apt-get install bumblebee... no change Above commands entered: update-alternatives --force --set x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf update-alternatives: error: alternative /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf for x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf not registered, not setting.
I also tried the commands suggested by @MrMEE:
$ sudo update-alternatives --force --set x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf
update-alternatives: error: alternative /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf for x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf not registered, not setting.
$ sudo ls /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/
ls: cannot access /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/: No such file or directory
try:
update-alternatives --remove-all x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf ldconfig
Argh, I am now stuck in No effects
mode and can't get Unity back, any tips guys?
@MrMEEE: I tried the command above, but can't get back to Unity to verify if it works.
did you remember to run:
ldconfig
if you did, please supply output of:
ls -la /etc/alternatives
MrMEEE, yes ran the commands exactly as you posted them in the same sequence.
$ sudo ls -la /etc/alternatives | grep gl
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2011-07-10 12:03 global-assembly-cache-tool -> /usr/bin/gacutil
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 2011-07-27 01:28 i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf -> /usr/lib/nvidia-current/alt_ld.so.conf
$ sudo ls -la /etc/alternatives | grep bumble
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2011-07-27 01:59 xorg_extra_modules-bumblebee -> /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2011-07-27 01:59 xorg_extra_modules-bumblebee -> /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg
Let me know if you'd like me to get rid of the grep
bits or what I should be looking for.
@'everyone: any tips on how to get Unity back on?
EDIT: desperate attempt, remove bumblebee nvidia-current && install bumblebee

@painreign,

For the others :
After trying to install the last version (xxx.5) with Synaptic, which was not successfull (upside down). So I had to complete the installation with "sudo dpkg --configure -a". But now after switching off and on my computer, it stops before the logo UBUNTU and it is completly blocked. I cannot start it. Just before the logo, I get this information :
10:170:151] nouveau 0000:01:00:0: Invalid rom contents 10:199959] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00:0: pointer to BIT loadval table invalid 10:??????] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00:0: couldn't find matching output script table

@jpiebrig: yup I had exactly the same issue, best to just completely purge bumblebee and nVidia and revert to the nouveau driver until the teething issues with the latest release are sorted. See LibGL issue for more details.

Also i suppose when i restart it won't start in normal mode. Only in recovery with failsafe graphics.
Before installing bumblebee I did sudo apt-get autoremove bumblebee and sudo apt-get remove nvidia-* then I could start ubuntu in normal mode and unity was enabled.
@StanAngeloff : I did what you say and the PC is working well again now. Thanks for your help.
has the core issue been resolved with this? it's working now for me but I want to know it's not by chance ;)
Looks like it's resolved due to an update in bumblebee.
Actually this last update caused gdm to lock up on boot on my ASUS 1215N so I uninstalled bumblebee entirely using a recovery console... without bublebee everything is back to working. (Ubuntu 11.04) So I think I will sit out the next few rounds of updates until there is something more stable.
I installed 2.1.0-1 on a fresh Ubuntu 11.04 on my Asus 1215n and unlike the previous tries I didn't get the backward upside-down issues, but still can't get it to work.
bryan@bryan-1215N:~$ optirun glxgears
I found a solution to the "FATAL: Error inserting nvidia_current.." try sudo rmmod nouveau
before running sudo bumblebee-configuration
if that works(no more FATAL) then you should blacklist nouveau by creating this file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-(whatever you want to name it).conf with this in it:
# /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom.conf
# Custom blacklist file so I don't mess with any of the files that come with
# the module-init-tools package.
blacklist nouveau
With that the nouveau seems to have been taken care and now the bumblebee-enable/disable scripts work, but only with sudo. This is what I have so far:
bryan@bryan-1215N:~$ sudo bumblebee-configuration

The original problem with the desktop showing backwards and upside down has been resolved after the last update. Logging in an "Ubuntu" session (Unity) or "Ubuntu Classic" works fine for me. Should I close the issue or still someone else experiencing this problem?
Hi, I can confirm the issue has been resolved, thank you everybody!
I can't confirm resolution of the issue, after reading that it had been resolved, I attempted a clean install from the latest version. I still get the lock up at gdm boot before login occurs, so I never get to the unity stage. Mind you there are no indications of errors during install, just after the first reboot. I have an ASUS 1215N running Ubuntu 11.04... should this constitute a new thread?
After today update everything installed smothly. Command optirun64 glxgears. Ran perfectly. But I restart after it. And in normal mode ubunto doesn't start.
So tell me what info i need to supply i will put it here.
Now I am gonna start in failsafe and uninstall everything again.
The gdm lockups / no compositing / etc bug was fixed yesterday. If the issue persists even after an update, please follow the instructions in: https://github.com/MrMEEE/bumblebee/issues/493#issuecomment-1662510
If you're still having issues, please create a new one unless it's related to "upside down / reversed"
gdm lockup is indeed fixed.
Thanks for the hard work!
After update to bumblebee latest version (2.1.0) and restart, the desktop shows all reversed and upside down. Trying to login in a "Ubuntu" session (Unity) just blinks a black screen and goes back to the login screen. Trying to login in a "Ubuntu Classic" session shows the desktop upside down and reversed. Only when login in a "Ubuntu Classic (No effects)" session everything seems normal, but compositing feature has to be manually enabled and Compiz doesn't work. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall bumblebee twice from PPA but the problem still the same.
