Future-Impact Stories #57

Open ALeRoy55 opened 1 month ago

ALeRoy55 commented 1 month ago

Tracking a list of Impact Stories for solutions that are in development.

Goal is to list solutions and future expected impacts and actions related to stories, and/or link to stories that are created. These may or may not be valuable to leadership and are therefore consolidated together rather than taking up space as individual cards.

EPA and TEMPO and Pandora: The Need: -WRF-CMAQ model helps understand the 3-d distribution of pollutants and evaluating sources and sinks -Observational data is needed to improve the model, specifically diurnal cycle info, and data with more complete spatial coverage than current available options (e.g., TROPOMI)

The Solution: -TEMPO concurrently and consistently measures tropospheric column densities of ozone, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, glyoxal, water vapor, and aerosols (aerosol optical depth) at high spatial and temporal resolution

The Need: -The AirNow program provides AQI (Air Quality Index) forecasts and nowcasts through a partnership between the EPA, NOAA, the NPS, NASA, the CDC, and tribal, state, and local agencies. Forecasts use ground-based networks, but ground-based networks are very sparse. LEO satellites help fill in the gaps, but they need to be low latency.

The Solutions: -TEMPO NRT data for NO2, O3, SO3, HCHO, and aerosols -Pandora AQ sensors in data sparse locations

The Need: -NOx emissions sources are not well-represented by current observations, which results in data gaps in the EPA National Emission Inventory, which makes it difficult to characterize and mitigate those NOx sources (including biomass burning, soil processes, lightning, and fossil fuel combustion). This leads to areas not attaining NAAQS under the US Clean Act Amendments, which is costly. The Solutions: -TEMPO NRT NO2 slant columns in NRT -Pandora AQ sensors in data sparse locations with likely high NOx, like agricultural areas

@ALeRoy55 should this issue been closed & combined with another or continue to be tracked? If kept, when would you like me to check back in? I've been selecting Thursdays one to two months from now for most check-ins.
