filled new cocktail after 01 was accidentally pumped out.

to disable pipette interlocks switched cables Z an X. Then use W an Z to open pipette.

Creation of Cocktail 02

May 31, 2016.

Laser Load 1722

Loaded 170 mg of unirradiated TIL-01 K-feldspar into a 37 hole tray (approximately 20 mg in 8 holes). TIL-01 is from the Isle fault along Route 9 in central Colorado and has a total gas age of about 800 Ma. Loaded 405 mg of irradiated K-glass into a 37 hole tray (approximately 20 mg in 18 holes). K-glass was from NM-248 that was an 80 hour TRIGA irradiation with a J of ~0.0185.

By using the control wire for value “Z” (inner air pipette) I was able to open both inner and outer cocktail pipettes. The pipette was pumped into the bone turbo via the minibone.

27 mg of TIL-01 and 24 mg of K-glass were fused with the CO2 laser with direct gas transfer into the pipette. I closed the microbone getters and utilized only the hot GP-50 getter in the minibone to getter the gas.

The pipette was then closed and all volumes were pumped through the minibone (without the bone seeing the high pressure).

Once pumped out, a normal cocktail was analyzed in Jan to determine the amount of 40Ar and 39Ar.
This unsaved analysis showed 0.37 fA/mg of 39Ar derived from the K-glass and 19 fA/mg of 40Ar derived primarily from TIL-01 K-spar.

Based on this, I repeated the fusion procedure and fused an additional 88 mg of TIL-01 K-spar and all of the K-glass. Note during this fusion procedure the copper tray became very hot, but no adverse affect was noted.

Once filled, the microbone and minibone were pumped via the microbone for about 30 minutes and the CO2 tray was pumped via the roughing closing valve “T” and opening valve “G).

After 30 minutes of pumping, a cocktail was analyzed on Jan (RunID = 4359-3128) which yielded 40Ar = 1830 fA and 39Ar = 148 fA and gas that is 99% radiogenic.

A new irradiation, NM-248mix2 is created and RunID’s of 4415 and 4416 are assigned to Felix and Jan cocktails, respectively.
