I propose that total level abundance be returned (on request) for sample data responses. I know it doesn't make sense for all cases, but for many it does. The user should be able to make his/her own decision about the use of the level sum in calculating relative abundance.
A separate endpoint (e.g., /pollen) limits the continuity of the code for web consumption.
