Belated merge of my branch with main code branch #82

Quite a few minor changes - hopefully not undoing tidying that Adam has done.

Commit comments should give a reasonable idea of the specific changes implemented. Once accepted (or rejected, fixed, resubmitted and accepted!) I have a few other more self-contained changes to feed back to the main fork.

I tried to make comments on each commit, but that isn't how GitHub works so sorry for the three bits. I'll pull the code and try compiling it once you get me an SLSTR filename.
