Create 2024 ACJ Events #67

Wiping the description and will leave an updated checklist of stuff to evaluate and/or improve:

Overall look and feel

Landing pages

Event pages

I know you'd like to improve (as would I!), but they're clean, functional, and look pretty damn good as is (unless I'm missing anything); I'd be happy to spend more time customizing the theme and templates that come with the plugins if you can budget for additional work; either way, I think it's a good representation to announce and then we could potentially roll in design/theme improvements.

Performance

Seems to be performing better on https://angelcityjazz.com/ and I'm looking at ways to further optimize; of course several plugins that could resize/scale/format images but not sure any are free; I looked at doing manually but that would be super tedious and time consuming.

Other

Again, I'll keep this description updated based on signoffs, questions, and concerns raised in the comments.

Hey Rocco - I wasn't able to access until I realized you set it to private; probably not necessary since we're working on stage.

That said, I think you can use that now as a base for the others.

Keep leaving feedback and questions in the comments as you go and and I'll review each event to make minor fixes/changes after you're done.

the title of the page should be hidden but it's still appearing overimposed the banner. How do you remove it?

The Hide page title setting is enabled but it doesn't always work... easy for me to fix w/ CSS.

is there a setting that keeps the full image visible no matter the size of the page so that the text on the banner remains visible?

It should functioning like that already. Is the image being hidden?

Pretty sure a looked at that page a couple times yesterday when troubleshooting and doing code updates and didn't see the new image. Saw it this morning and realized you swapped out the cover image (rather than adding as an image as we've done before).

Either way, check it now (clear the cache or refresh if you're still seeing the cover)...

...and let's continue to make changes and improvements to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ (including new art and colors) and I'll migrate stuff to live whenever ready.

Also wanted to see if we could display IN the carousel - https://acjdev.wpengine.com

Personally I think the latter could work well as we could also add events you'd want to feature. Probably would need to remove the title and overlay for that slide. And possibly use a variation of the banner (it pulls in the featured image - which can be different from the image we're using for the banner).

Let me know what you think and I'll try to spend a little time on this over the weekend.

Implemented option 1 on https://angelcityjazz.com/ but my preference would be to have that in the carousel (similar to the following sites we've used for inspiration): https://www.sfjazz.org/ https://www.pdxjazz.org/

It wouldn't work with the banner (or any image) with text (or art) on the edges could get cropped. It's much better to include the post (or page) so we'd have better control of how to display (for example - if you minimize the screen of https://www.sfjazz.org/, the title is hidden on smaller screens)....

...that all said, I'm realizing I can't see the carousel on SF Jazz anymore (can you?) - maybe they just changed it?

All in all, I'm still on the fence about having the banner + carousal underneath - what do you think about having them both on https://angelcityjazz.com/?

Hi Gus, can you check the formatting of the text in https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/wayne-horvitz-zony-mash-electric-circus/

I used both paragraph and quote format next to the line up. I couldn't get the quote format to match the previous event even by copying and pasting the quote from another event page. Also it's very difficult for me to edit the text in the blue box as it appears by default as black in the editor. Can this be changed?

With regards to the text, I'm not sure why the paragraph text is defaulting to black (after I've set the text colors on groups and blocks to white), but you can change in the editor by clicking on a paragraph and changing the color in the sidebar (see the screengrab).

I did check the colors on stage real quick - they look good! but would like to play around with the colors you provided in https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/67#issuecomment-2151589025 ... then realized I didn't see any info in that comment or email.

If you could post them, I'll try to play around on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ so we can compare and contrast.

Very cool - thanks for sharing the color codes - what do you think of https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ with the following:

007f91 (background color) - primary

bc27f6 (logo fill color) - secondary

Also could add #261375 (background color) and some of the colors for 'circle shapes' as the background certain sections/groups

I don't have a strong preference in between what on the stagings site now and this. Bty did you see my attempt to add the festival logo next to the ticket button on the event pages like this:

While I 'think' I get why you'd want to add that (to associate those events with this years fest?), I'm not sure adding that logo (or any logo) is the most effective way to go about that... especially on pages where there might also be sponsor logos.

Think it would be cleaner/more effective if we displayed the event series (if we used that feature included in https://theeventscalendar.com/)...

Hi Gus, I've replaced the banner with one without text and it looks cleaner. I left the text on the banner on the live homepage. I will swap it out when we publish the line-up. I guess we never had the time on the event listing page. WOuld be great to add it if possible somehow.

Also, I noticed that when the event grid is loading on the festival page it will first display the events with very big pictures and only scale them down when they are all loaded. Is there a way to avoid this as it looks awkward. Also it seems like it takes a long time to load.

Wondering what that would look like if cropped a bit (I could again try on another environment just for comparison).

I left the text on the banner on the live homepage. Make sense - still want to test how it looks/works in the carousel (on another environment).

It's squished in between the event title and the website menu. Maybe it would look better on the right corner so that there is less text to compete with? in terms of color scheme we can use the colors on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ As of now the plan is to go live on Monday july 8. We can leave the subscribe to calendar if you think it could be useful to some people. I think it's discreet enough and it doesn't bother me

bty the staging site feels very sluggish. It takes me minutes to load each page. I even had the server time out a few times. My connection is not the fastest but I can load all other sites much faster.

Just evaluating the colors, I think https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ stands out a bit more (while stage seems a bit similar to some previous festivals (does that kinda make sense?). Feeling inclined to invert on stage (to match dev) and then go through the landing pages and make sure all backgrounds are consistent with current branding.

I also can go into the theme and modify the colors for the headers, links, and mobile menu (think those might look better on https://acjdev.wpengine.com/).

I would only use it for archived festival, not for the current one.

I'm planning to have the full schedule ready to publish in a week or so.

So in a week or so? Longer? Just wanna make sure I set aside time for working in design and performance improvements.

That 'should' redirect to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/ (not seeing anything weird on that page). Do you mean the 2024 event pages? If yes, I could work on the margins/spacing (or just hide for this year's fest). Also - don't be alarmed if the category background doesn't match (I just swapped out the colors in CSS but might not see w/o clearing cache).

same nesting issue - how's it now?

bty the staging site feels very sluggish. It takes me minutes to load each page. I even had the server time out a few times. My connection is not the fastest but I can load all other sites much faster.

How's it compare to https://angelcityjazz.com/?

I 'think' the development environments are sluggish because we're not using Cloudflare https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/46. Still probably could optimize things like images. I'll try to spend some time on that next chance I get....

There are a couple things I'd still like to improve on the event landing and the pages themselves....

As of now the plan is to go live on Monday july 8.

Guess I'll need to find some time during the long holiday weekend to make sure we're ready to migrate!

BTW We're getting ready to take the train up to Seattle where we'll be housesitting for the next couple weeks. My availability will most likely be sporadic over the next couple days but should have a window on Friday (and over the weekend if necessary).

FYI, it seems to be happening whenever I edit an event page. As soon as the editing format is loaded, the new eventbrite register button appears, locked and with last year's event embedded. I think I have removed over 25 of these unwanted blocks.

Rocco - as noted in https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/68#issuecomment-2211216504, it 'looks' like I was able to remove the register button without issue.

Not sure which other events are having the issue, but I'm going to review each of them and check for extra buttons (we can log ones with problems https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/68) in as well as other formatting issues (like that bios all being one paragraph from copying and pasting).

Is https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/douye-yafeu-tyhinba/ still a work in progress? The title (+ Yafeu Tyhinba) and name (TBD) in one of the bios seemed a bit off. Also doesn't look like there's a url in one of YouTube embeds.

I cleaned up the formatting in https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/jennyandiseulat2220/ but the block next to the lineup seems a bit off (with a paragraph about one artist and then a quote about the other). wondering if they should be in separate blocks (I could try to see what that looks like).

The issue with the Register buttons is that they reappear automatically after removal whenever I edit the page. Still add to remove a few today. I guess I'll keep removing them but it is super annoying. I've updated the Yafeu Tyhimba event page as there has been a change in line-up. I noticed the improved formatting for the festival branding but it still needs work. Can you try to move the script to the right end of the page? or at least space it out a bit more from the page title. I will be updating the text block for most of the events after publishing so I wouldn't worry too much about slight formatting issues there.
