This is a build failure report for perl from smoker@perlguy.com\, generated with the help of perlbug 1.33 running under perl v5.7.0.
Daily build and smoke test by smokingjacket v0.01.

Is it wrong to presume that people/builders/testers/smokers building bleadperl *ALSO* /read/ p5p?
Why is it that if Jarkko /explicitly/ tells that db-* fails with the latest tarball that bug reports keep streaming in which report exactly what was announced to fail?
A PLEA TO ALL:
*READ* what Jarkko writes as comments with the latest tarballs and *DO NOT* report bugs that are announced\, in order to prevent the perlbug database to flood with duplicates that are *known* in advance.
At this time I do /not/ have time to mark them duplicate\, but think about the poor soul that has to detect those ... Yes\, it's a lot of work\, and it's not so long ago that we did a cleanup with common effort. Let's keep the open bug count as low as possible\, which also motivates bug diggers to pick up open bugs to fight.
Kevin\, this is nothing personal\, but you are number X to report the same announced bug.

Not specifically\, no.

FWIW\, smokingjacket rsyncs perl-current - unrelated to the tarball.

Unfortunately\, I'm not aware of code that allows me to easily seperate known test failures from unexpected test failures barring some interesting modifications to the test suite.

How\, then\, should we be doing daily build failures? It sounds as if perhaps the smoke test builds should not be going into the bugdb\, but instead to the smokers(whatever it's called now\, sorry) list. I'd be more than willing to move my apparently redundant bug reports there - I'll get to see them\, interested parties who wish to see the burning parts of the tree can subscribe and watch\, and I'll know within a day when that bug gets fixed.
The issue here seems to be that as we automate more and more the process of reporting build failures\, we're flooding the bugdb with lots of hard-to-seperate-out reports. Perhaps it's time to add a category to the bugdb to support these tests? I don't expect that automatic build testing is going to cease any time soon\, but nor do I believe that each automatic build report should become an open bug.
Suggestions?

As smokers is starting\, we *do* indeed need another way to report the test results. My mktest (http://home.hccnet.nl/h.m.brand/mktest) is a nice way to start the tests and make summarized results\, but we'd like to *not* get them in the perlbug database\, at least /not/ the way normal bugs are reported.
Do we
[ ] 1. Need another DB? Don't think so\, too much admin tasks [ ] 2. Archive the results for later perusal Probably [ ] 3. Need a search mechanism for that? Probably [ ] 4. Need some meta-summary? Think of something like: At .patch = 8873\, the only failres reported are 'db-*\, op/each\, numconvert and pragma' all other tests pass on all received test results. [ ] 5. Need a weekly/monthly digest? Like Simon's doing for p5p and p6 (thank you)

No (and I do read p5p).

Because smokingjacket does not look to see if what things fail on have already been reported. A smoker doesn't manually report the bug. As well\, this is from an rsync of perl-current\, not the tarball. I understand your pain\, though :)

Maybe we need (as has been brought up) somewhere else to put the smoking results. I could see how if there are 100 smokers\, that getting an announces bug reported 100 extra times would be very bad.
Kevin\, this is nothing personal\, but you are number X to report the same announced bug.
Nothing taken personally :) I\, for now\, have taken the smokejacket script out of cron until a concensus has been made to how the bugs should be reported.
Cheers\, Kevin

Would it be worth changing perlbug so that if it is a smoke test\, it automatically goes to [ID: $DATE.999]\, so that all the reports can get added to the same ID?

Hmm. I could live with that. Makes finding them in the bugdb real easy\, too. Is that easily doable?

That would likely be helpful. Would this cause any issues in the cases where there are legit non-dup bugs found while smoking?
Cheers\, Kevin
Legit non-dup bugs will not be part of an automatic build report - they will be a bug opened by a watchful user after seeing the build failure. Right?

Perhaps another well-known multiple of 3? >:) \
There's more to consider
+ Would it be helpful to have smokers `register' their testing machines\, so they don't have to send in the configuration time after time.
+ Would it be helpful to have a stampfile other than .patch that indicates the
patchlevel that *does* matter for testing (document patches won't change
test results) to prevent useless computer cycles and test reports. Test
reports should than mention this patch number in the header like
SMOKE=8876 OK 5.7.1 on HP-UX 11.00 Dperlio Dthreads Dithreads D64bitall

By all means have another bugdb.
_IF_ you do want to continue to use the current bugdb\, you could consider sending a mail to dailybuild@bugs.perl.org with the following (nearly inherent) hints:
category=dailybuild
status=open|closed
severity=fatal|high
etc.
My point is that you should be able to set the category to whatever you like (start a new one today)\, and then you can assign any bug to any other bug as a parent/child and/or duplicate.
Please note that the address won't work until I set up a .qmail pointer\, just say the word\, the rest is already in place.
I don't know if that's useful to you or not\, but at least you then have an inter-related set of records.
???
Ciao

Builds that have no test failures could be ok reports\, too. Builds that don't successfully compile get a severity=fatal.
Very nice.

Is 'dailybuild' appropriate\, or should that read something else?
I guess it would be sensible if it was something along the lines of the mailing list address name (smokers|testpilots|...) for consistency.
Ciao
I'm coming in a little late to this conversation\, seems like you've got the situation well in hand.
I should have anticipated that perlbug might get flooded by this little project. :(
Anyhow\, just a few points-of-order...

Most smokers will *not* be active readers of p5p (I don't). Most people who volunteered expressed that they have plenty of spare computing power\, but not alot of tuits to devote. It cannot be a requirement that a smoker must skim p5p before sending in their report. It must be near 100% automated\, otherwise it will not work.
This is why failure reports kept streaming in\, but it looks like you're already on the way towards solving it. Just keep in mind that whatever you come up with must require no regular human intervention.
Unfortunately\, I'm not aware of code that allows me to easily seperate known test failures from unexpected test failures barring some interesting modifications to the test suite.
The interesting modifications were done a few days ago. :) The test suite now honors todo tests\, expressing a test which is expected to fail and will be fixed shortly. See t/op/chop.t test #34 for an example and the latest Test::Harness docs for details.
