The computer is a migration from an old mac pro running 10.7.5 to imac using yosemite. As Calibre and Marvin do not appear to work, I deleted Calibre, removed ~/Library/Preferences/Calibre, reinstalled Calibre , IOS reader and marvin XD, configured IOS reader to use marvin and did the configuration steps.
It just doesn't seem to detect the phone. It detects something but something is wrong.
