If you've read all the forums, then you know that Apple removed access that allowed third-party addons like iOSR to work back in iOS 8.3. This has been an ongoing problem that isn't likely to be solved for you unless a) you're using a foreign version of iOS (maybe; we're not sure on that yet), or b) Marvin gets rewritten so that iOSR can once again access the file areas it needs to. Or, I suppose, c) Apple relents and allows the access again, but I doubt that will happen because I'm pretty sure they removed it for security reasons.
Hello KatyaL,
Just ran across this posting. I have a similar problem, but with iOS 9.0.2 on an iPad 3, Yosemite 10.10.5 on a MacBook Pro, and using both the latest versions of Marvin (v. 2.8.5) and Calibre (v. 2.41). I've perused several forums, mostly outdated I must say, and have attempted various solutions trying to get Calibre and Marvin to communicate--without success I must say.
Having stumbled onto your more recent posting, here on GitHub, it appears I've found my answer. Not being too technically savvy let me see if I get the gist of what you're saying; for the foreseeable future Marvin and Calibre will NOT be able to communicate due to a security measure instituted by Apple. Is that correct? If so I won't waste any more time trying to solve an unsolvable problem, i.e. getting Marvin and Calibre to play nice together.
If my assessment is accurate, is there a workaround that you know of, not using Calibre, that would allow one to sync their eBooks with Marvin? I personally prefer not using cloud-based options such as DropBox for security reasons and that I may not always have Internet access. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help.
Respectfully,
Señor Magnifico
You're mostly accurate. For the foreseeable future, Marvin and Calibre will not be able to communicate using the MarvinXD and iOSRA plugins. You can still use Marvin and Calibre, and transfer books from Calibre to Marvin by setting up the server option within Calibre and connecting to that to download individual books. For more information, I recommend you check out the Marvin forum on mobilereads: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=260. There's a lot more information there than I can readily provide here. There may be other ways to do the transfer, as well; I'm not very familiar with them, because I was lucky enough to find out about the problem before I'd updated iOS, and so I can still sync.
Thanks KatyaL,
I’ll check out the forum link you listed. I figured out a way to drag and drop books via iTunes, but a bit of a hassle, yet workable. Not sure if I’ll stick with Marvin in the end though. I tried to load some PDFs and couldn’t read them and I need to read some books that are in PDF format. Either that or I’ll have to convert my books to ePub before transfer. Again yet another hassle. Stanza seems to work for me as well, although I like the Marvin platform and it seems more stable. Yet if I can’t get the materials I need into Marvin, then it’s not worth it to me.
With Gratitude,
Sr. M.
