Consider giving users a broader view of where they are in a mission? #1324

The current top-down map is very zoomed in and is best used for navigation. I was thinking that we may want to consider a second, complementary top-down map placed somewhere on the right-side dashboard that provides a more holistic view of where the user is in a neighborhood, where they've walked (with maybe a "fog of war" type visualization to incentivize exploration--read more about that here and here), and the labels they've placed, etc.

@jonfroehlich if we are willing to expand the size of the right sidebar (which I think we actually probably have room to do), we could give the current mini map a bit more functionality! We could add pan/zoom control. We could add the option to switch to satellite imagery in case that's ever helpful while auditing. I messed with the sidebar and the map controls a bit in the screenshot below to show a bit of what it would look like.

What a cool idea! We should discuss more. By seeing satellite imagery, we also provide some additional contextual cues and even, possibly, visual information about the location of curb ramps, etc. (although perhaps then it will be more clear that our lat/lng estimation is not perfect).

This could also let us think about expanding the top-down map in certain missions to just label sidewalks or other things where satellite views are advantageous to streetview views (or could be used in concert).

So, lots of possibilities!

Very fair. Although it may also encourage people to get closer to an object before trying to label it? Since they will see how much more off target the label is when labeling from far away :sweat_smile: Overall it's probably a net negative, but there is some upside there.

Oh yes, that's a great idea! I hadn't realized how close we were to having everything we needed to do mapping through aerial imagery!

@jonfroehlich @misaugstad Here's a few options of what a slightly larger top-down map could look like. It includes a bunch of variations on the "fog of war" concept. The blue color is just a placeholder. I wonder if this is it's own map, or if it replaces the current map? Here's a few other changes I incorporated that we can talk about:

  1. Replace the default Google Maps person with a dot + view cone.
  2. Green/ Red path indicator was confusing to me. Replaced with single color solid/dashed line
  3. Incorporated observed area feedback, could compliment #1316 210505 Mockups

I think I like 5) Tiles Light and maybe 1) Maps to Satellite best.

I like 5) Tiles Light and 4) Fog over Satellite! I also think that I would like 2) Dark to Light more if the dark was a little less dark. Same with Fog over Satellite (a little less foggy). We want to give them the experience of revealing the map, but sometimes the general structure of what's on the map can be helpful, which makes me want the overlays to not be quite so opaque. Another very small thing is that I think the height (?) of the cone should be a little longer.

I do like 1) Maps to Satellite but I think that it is likely too difficult to be worth implementing. Most of the others just require an overlay over the map, whereas Maps to Satellite would probably require two overlaid instances of Google Maps, and I'm not sure how we would bring different parts of each map to the foreground.

And here's a quick option on what observed area and completed labels could look like: Observed Area

@misaugstad Do you know what the "Field of View" angle is for project sidewalk street view? And when you click the arrows to move, is that a fixed distance? If so what is it? This info will help with sizing the viewcone.

At the first zoom level it's about 90 degrees. At 2nd zoom level, about 53 degrees. And third zoom level, about 28 degrees.

when you click the arrows to move, is that a fixed distance? If so what is it? This info will help with sizing the viewcone.

The average distance is about 10 meters, but it is not fixed. Most are in the 5 - 15 meter range, not many over 20 meters.
