It is mentioned in the User Guide that FoodRem item names only support alphanumeric characters and a specific set of symbols. This will cover the large majority of FoodRem users that use latin characters, not limited to English.
For languages that do not have Latin characters, their latin translations can be used e.g. "Pad Thai" / "Phad Thai" or "Pad See Eow" / "Phad Si Uw" / ....

As the application is a food inventory management system, the F&B place might have items with non english names, particularly places that serve more ethnic cuisines, hence being able to input non english names could be a necessary feature.
