2 years ago The macOS HIG supports that we should be doing this. Per @brentsimmons in Slack, we should make this change.
There are some toolbar icons that should be colored in active state in my opinion - “toggleStarred” (yellow) and “toggleRead” (blue) - this would be default Apple app behavior and make then more distinguishable when active (as it is also currently in NNW on iOS).
