I set a fixed size of 18px (slightly bigger than default, but it looks good to me)
you have to restart Thunderbird to see this change because style sheets are cached.
To test the version above, download the zip file, drag the file into Thunderbird Add-ons Manager, do not extract contents or if won't install.
When activating paint mode from the QuickFolders tools menu the tool button turns into the icon for the palette dropdown, which can be used to select a new color to "paint" the tabs:
the brush is too big, compared with the other icons. Also, in dark mode it may initially show a white brush on bright background.
Adjust the size of the icon so it works better.
