Most flying mobs should avoid the ground, and not land unless they're hunting and/or attacking the player.
In forest biomes for example, dragons will outright just smash their way right through trees. On low-end PCs, this can be VERY laggy. This should only happen if the dragon (or other flying mobs) detects a player, which then they could start smashing their way through.
