A very professional looking feature for UIs is to display an item sprite along with the other information in an item tracker. Another popular use of sprites is in inventory or gear setup configurations. Authors currently have no easily accessible way to access these.

Using external databases. Creating and maintaining one is outside of the capability of most authors, and most public ones have features to prevent this usage or are poorly maintained.
