Yea, I feel like that GUI would be pretty difficult though. That's why I'm
leaning more towards something like a box that comes up and either shows an
array of squares (nothing in them) and a number in them that a user can click
quickly or arrow up and down to and hit enter, or a box that comes up with a
vertical list, much like when you right click on the tray icon, that lets you
quickly click on them or arrow up and down and hit enter to switch.

I agree. The best part about mDesktop for me is that it is lightweight.

Rather than alt-tab: I have it set on my Ubuntu install to switch desktops when
I press <Windows>+<ArrowKey>. So <Windows>+<Left> goes to the desktop to the
left, and so on. Another nice thing about Ubuntu is that I can hold down
Windows and Alt and then an arrow to move the active window to the next desktop
with me.
Since <Windows>+<ArrowKey> already does something, how about using AltGr or
RightCtrl?

something like the old gnome pager would be nice where a box for each desktop
is shown in the taskbar (or anywhere) and in each box is a representation of
the windows in each desktop shown as smaller boxes. What is nice about the
gnome pager is dragging a window from one desktop to the other via the pager
and being able to click on a given desktop in the pager and being taken to that
desktop.
I realize that these features are not trivial to implement, but as long as
we're dreaming we might as well dream big.
